American Fork High School's Theater Arts Calendar
Future Drama Students/Drama Enthusiasts, August 2023
Hello and welcome! The upcoming year of 2023-2024 looks like it will be a surefire hit. It’s already up and running to be the best year yet. The shows have been selected, the drama council has been preparing for your arrival, and you are receiving this letter to make you aware of future dates and expenses that will be asked of you if you choose to be part of this year’s season.
To kick off this year, we decided to do something exciting and different! To help prepare for Shakespeare Auditions, TUESDAY, August 22ND, we will be hosting various coaches/teachers of Shakespeare on Thursday-Friday, August 17th-18th, at lunch in the Drama Room. They will be there to assist you in selecting and working your monologue/audition piece. You can also find most monologues at www.Shakespeare-monologues.org. Please come and take advantage of this great opportunity. SHAKESPEARE TEAM AUDITIONS ARE AFTER SCHOOL , TUESDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 3-5 PM.
Below, you will see listed the official drama calendar which can also be accessed on our website: AFHSDRAMA.ORG, as well as our page on Facebook page: American Fork High Drama Department. Everything has been set in place for this year to be one in which you personally can cultivate growth and achieve a tremendous amount of success.
As you can see, there will be a tremendous amount of work put in on the part of the production staff, parents of students, and most of all, of the students themselves. SUESSICAL the MUSICAL (Nov. 16TH-21ST ) will be “outside of class projects” rehearsed between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM through September-November. Auditions are TBA, but keep checking the Drama Room door, Room #24, for further audition information.
The winter musical, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE (Feb. 8th-13th) will be produced in class (A4) and you will need to be in the Musical Theater Class both Fall AND Winter Semester to be a part of this production. The show will run Feb. 8th-13th. There will be an additional audition the first week of school for people who wish to participate, but were unable to before.
Our last show will be based on a devised theater piece from London, The Old Vic Theatre. It is titled, A MONSTER CALLS. It is based Patrick Ness's piercing novel, and was brought to the stage in a powerful new adaptation by Sally Cookson. This will also be auditioned and rehearsed after school from 2:30-5:30, during January-March. It will also be our school One-Act at Competition on March 7th/April 18th.
Auditions are open to the entire student body.
Here is a small synopsis from the Kennedy Center:
"Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved to America. But now his mum’s very sick and she’s not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. Then, one night, at seven minutes past midnight, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears."
Join us as we explore this marvelously tragic piece of theater!
The performances will be March 21st-26th, 2024
The year will start with auditions held Monday, August 22nd from 3:00-5:00 for the 2023 Shakespeare Team. The team will also be practicing before and after school the month of September. Please note that the Evening of Shakespeare will be held on Oct. 3RD, with a trip to the Festival being held over Oct. 5th-7th. (It will cost approximately $275.00 to attend the festival.)
Sign ups for Shakespeare Team AND Musical Theater Auditions will be posted on the Room #24 door. Please come prepared with a 30 second -1 minute monologue from any Shakespearean play for the Shakespeare Team and 16 bars of a musical theater song for Musical Theater Auditions. YOUR PREPARATION IS APPRECIATED!
Lastly, let me tell you a little bit about our Drama Club. It has been around since the school began in 1902. It has a long history of Caveman pride and tradition. By becoming a member of Drama Club, you will receive one ticket to every production that the Drama Department puts on. You will also have regular activities, some service projects, and club sponsored parties. The cost is $15.00 to join.
Let me be the first to personally welcome you into our theater arts program. I look forward to meeting each of you and hope that this letter helps you assess this upcoming year a bit better. See you soon!
Sincerely Yours,
Mr. Neal Johnson
